They ate dinner, and at nine o’clock Margot went up to her room, drained and unsettled. She sat at the open window and watched the bats swoop over the river. It helped settle her nerves, aerial marvels that they were.

Going to bed so early proved a mistake, however, and after tossing and turning for what seemed like hours she had to get up. Looking at her watch, she was stunned to see it was still only twenty past ten. She put on her robe and went downstairs.

A soft light drew her to the kitchen. Making no sound, Margot looked in from the door. The interior light from the open fridge revealed Didier in his pyjamas, sneakily eating a chunk of cheese. He hadn’t seen her so Margot coughed politely. Turning, he guiltily put down the knife he’d been holding.

“Sorry,” Margot smiled. “I didn’t mean to sneak up on you.”

Didier swallowed his mouthful and brushed the crumbs from his pyjama top. “Alia keeps nagging me to lose weight.” He patted his belly. “But cheese is a hard thing to resist.”

“Tell me about it.”

He closed the fridge door and flicked on the ceiling light. “Is everything okay?”

“Yes. I just came down for a glass of water.”

“Help yourself.”

He stepped aside. Margot went to the sink to fill a tumbler. She gulped down two mouthfuls and afterwards turned to face him.

“I had a little heart trouble last year,” Didier explained, taking a seat at the table.

“Nothing serious, I hope?”

“They had to put in a stent. I’ve had no problems since, but Alia likes to fuss.”

“That’s because she cares about you.”

“I know. But there’s life in this old dog yet.”

Margot moved around the counter and joined him at the table. “She’s a smart girl.”

“I know. At school, she was always coming top in her class.”

“She could go a long way in the police judiciare.”

He folded his arms. “No doubt she could but she’s never said anything about joining.”

“Maybe she feels obligated.”

“To whom?”

“To you.”

Didier chuckled. “You think she’s wasted here?”

“Don’t you?”

He looked her in the eye. “There’s more to life than having a career. If Alia said she wanted to join the Police Nationale, I assure you I would do everything possible to support her. But I’m not going to push. She’s old enough to make up her own mind.”

Margot conceded a small nod. Perhaps he was right. And in any case, she had no right to interfere. She took another gulp of water. “I meant to say, I found another way into the back of the villa. There’s a second driveway a little further along.”

Didier slowly nodded his head. Obviously, he already knew. “You spoke to Madame Baudet.”

Margot gave him a closer look, not sure if that had been a question or a statement. Were all her movements being relayed back and forth between the two of them? “We had an interesting chat.”

He nodded again. No doubt he’d already been briefed on what had been said. Margot continued to look him in the eye, but it didn’t seem she would be getting anything more out of him.
